MEDIA RELEASE:    Richmond River Rescue Meeting

The Stakeholders? Meeting will be held this Wednesday 12th March, in the Richmond Room, Regatta Ave, Ballina, commencing at 7pm.

Presentations will be delivered by key personnel from NSW Fisheries, the Dept of Environment and Climate Change, Richmond River County Council and independent experts.

Stakeholders will be engaged in assessing issues, documenting concerns and posing a variety of solutions.

A Task Force will be elected from representative stakeholder groups, to take the issues to all levels of Government, seeking solutions and remediation.

It is absolutely vital that community input be heard, acknowledged and acted upon by bureaucrats and politicians at all levels.

Environmental disasters that lead to fish kills have negative impacts across the entire community and cannot be allowed to continue.

MEDIA RELEASE:    Task Force Tackles  River
            Richmond River Rescue Task Force

?A high-powered, high-profile Task Force has been elected by over 50 representatives of community groups to tackle the problems on the floodplain that are impacting on the Richmond River.
The sad sequence of fish kills over the last twenty years or more are simply symptoms of an ailing estuarine ecosystem. This has consequences for the entire community.
ECOfishers convened and facilitated the meeting of all relevant stakeholder groups and Govt Depts. And all major political parties were represented at the meeting.
The Task Force comprises expertise from Agriculture, Fisheries, Farmers, Forestry, Local Govt, Small Business and floodplain users.
The challenges facing this Task Force are substantial and significant. They have divided the catchment into three sub-catchment areas and will be setting short and long term objectives.
The Task Force has been charged with representing scientific and community views on sedimentation, restoration of riparian vegetation,  native pasture improvement, flood and agricultural drain management and wetland restoration.
The NSW Labor Govt is able to locate hollow logs holding $150million for Equine Influenza management. and an additional $150million for another Sydney Iron Cove bridge, so the Northern Rivers community is realistically expecting there are more hollow logs washed up on our floodplain.?

MEDIA RELEASE:    Fishing Closure Finally Lifted

The last of the fishing closures which extended from Flat Rock north of the mouth of the Richmond to Keith Hall Lane in the south, has finally been lifted (as of midnight Friday 14th March).

The closure which was invoked in January following another disastrous fish kill, was implemented to protect returning stocks repopulating the river.

It is great news for both commercial and recreational fishers, who will now be able to harvest fresh, local seafood on the eve of Easter.

Further monitoring will continue next week to assess stocks and water quality.

The disastrous January fish kill at Ballina Quays alone, resulted in a kill equivalent to the total annual harvest by commercial fishers.

The community is advised to be aware that some fish will be harvested carrying Red Spot Ulcers. This is caused by acid water running off acid sulphate soils on the floodplain.

It  is recommended that fish with ulcers be disposed of humanely and NOT returned to the river.
