NB. 3mg/L of dissolved oxygen borders upon the CRITICAL LEVEL for fih and crustacean survival. So why would the Flood Plain Manager tell the media, it was enough for native fish to survive?

More than 76% of their flood mitigation drains had dissolved oxygen levels of LESS THAN 5mg/L, when scientifically sampled by ECOfishers on May 19th, 2009. This poor quality water is stored for weeks, behind closed flood gates and suddenly released on masse, into the river, whenever ther is a fresh or flood. ECOfishers management regime is to have the flood gates opened so that tidal flushing and dilution of this "marginal water," continues constsantly, rather than one big hit, on the biodiversity and ecosystems of the Richmond River. We simply can't have a healthy fishery while we constantly have unhealthy habitat. And poor quality water, contributes in a major way, to an unhealthy habitat. The current management regime employed by Richmond River County Council is to have the local farmer manage the flood gates. Often, they just prefer to keep them closed!

CHICKEN SHIT PROPOSAL: 16,000 cubic metre chicken manure storage facility, proposed to be sited on the Richmond River flood plain in a flood prone area!! ECOfishers help has been sought by the local farming community. Lismore City Council is considering a DA for the above proposal. On behalf of recreational fishers we have investigated this proposal. It conforms with the Council's requirements and LEP. However, ECOfishers will be making formal representations to the Council, in order to ensure consent conditions are put in place to prevent any localised run-off into local waterways and during flood events, it doesn't end up contaminating the Richmond with excess nutrients. Chicken shit is high in both nitrogen and phosphorus - the main threats (with sedimentation) to our vital estuarine Zostera beds. ECOfishers would be surprised and most disappointed, if Council were to approve this application WITHOUT strict conditions to ameliorate any possible impacts. Even if it means storing this shit, on a built mound, ABOVE flood level! ECOfishers is working with the community to improve the health and water quality of the Richmond River and here we have this sort of proposed development, on a site that goes underwater in a flood. An "unhealthy" proposal for certain. ECOFISHERS, Healthy Habitat, Healthy Fishery! ECOfishers - making people part of the solution.

The greenies are well known for their stunts. That's about the extent of their reputation. They certainly aren't known or recognised for actually doing anything (like getting their hands dirty) - other than whinging and carping to the community about how we all should live, what we shouldn't and should eat etc. (I don't like tofu either! I prefer fresh local fish and plenty of it) Well here's another ripper. A greenie candidate in the up-coming state election, says in todays media, (quote) "he also wants to end fish kills in the Richmond River." NSW fishers know all about that. You only have to see what those greenies, with their Labor mates, have done in their marine parks! Recreational fishers be warned! Think BEFORE you vote.

OFFICIAL REPORT - DECEMBER FISH KILL. Fisheries have released their official report into the fish kill in Reedy and Empire Vale Creeks, Richmond River, December 2010. It makes pretty appalling reading. While it doesn't give a precise break down of the number of different species, (probably difficult to do when "thousands" of fish are involved, and the priority is to get the damn gates open,) it does highlight yet again, the continuing mismanagement of the flood gates at those sites. It was the third such unnecessary fish kill at the same site during the last five (5) years. And that is why Fisheries finally wielded the big stick, against those who purport to manage the floodgates and the flood plain! Mismanagement at its worst! And these structures and buffoons, are funded by we the taxpayers! WHY THE HELL DOES RICHMOND COUNTY COUNCIL & THEIR BUREAUCRATS, INSIST UPON KEEPING THE GATES ILLEGALLY LOCKED CLOSED?
