Commercial fishers are proposing a seasonal closure upon themselves from between December to May - not because of any real or perceived threat of extinction, but because of high levels of biotoxins in pipis, during this summer period. All coastal sewage treatment plants are at capacity or beyond during this holiday/tourist period. And with the summer wet season, many treatment plants malfunction, overflow or are submerged by floodwaters.
An increase in minimum size from 40mm to 45mm, for our commercial colleagues is also irrelevant because there is simply no market for pipis that size.
Claims by the greenies that pipis face extinction, without a total ban on harvesting/collecting, is pure and sheer green nonsense. These preservationists ought be more careful with our timber resources, than wasting paper on rubbish like that!

My experience talking to a commercial fisher, he does get a better price for larger Pipis.
Greenies always take the easy road, ignore the science and the most common indicators then target the high profile Fisher or anyone for that matter who is enjoying life.

The extreme green anti-fishing minority, the Greens, propensity for gross misinformation (and disinformationa) knows no bounds! They are also claimig Whiting stocks will decline because of a decline in pipi stocks! Ever seen a Whiting attack a real live pipi in its natural environment? And Whiting don't have any teeth! Nor do the extremists - they continually put their foot in their mouth!
