One of the recommendations from the Labor/Green dominated Upper House Inquiry into Recreational Fishing, (Recommendation 35) proposes the mandatory wearing of life jackets for rock fishers in NSW. Since the majority of our 20,000 members are also rock fishers, ECOfishers invites your comments and contributions to this recommendation. Use this site or our ECOfishers network.

Education is the answer, Life jackets should be optional. I have fished from the rocks for 35 years and have not been washed in to the sea. I still fish regularly three to four times a week. If the swell is too big I don't go fishing. Instead of MPA officers harassing people they should be using the time to educate rock fishers especially non English speaking groups. This summer there have been more swimming fatalities  than from rock fishing so why not consider life jackets for swimmers and surfers.
Note*I am also a surfer and have assisted three people ashore from our local rip this summer.

Already, anyday of the week you can witness the boating rules broken where small craft fishers offshore refuse to wear a lifejacket whilst fishing.  This is just another restriction on fishers. Anyone who has any Knowledge on casting and fishing would know a lifejacket would hinder a fisher. Also when moving around rocks a fisher needs as less hinderance as possible.
Another revenue raising attempt!

Indeed. Labor's regulation now requires fishers in vessels of less than 4.8m, when operating alone at sea, to wear a life jacket at all times. The new proposal is for NSW fishers when rock fishing, to be similarly attired.

Yes,  Urchin, we know where this "@#%*^  @*&^$  idea," came from. If you were to trawl the evidence from the Upper House Inquiry into Recreational Fishing, you would be able to identify the individual who proposed it - though we don't think it is necessarily relevant to this weekly debate.

"Personal choice," says the dozens of emails! One member, who is also an active surf life-saver, working his Club's rubber ducky, says they never wear life jackets. And their duckies are well under 4.8m and he often works alone! Hmmm, I wonder are there two sets of rules? Check out your local surf lifesaver next time you see him playing around in the Club's rubber ducky behind the surf break, and notice if he is wearing the compulsory life jacket! ?

Whoa, whoa, folks. Please understand, this is just a PROPOSAL at this stage. It's not inevitable, nor was it Labor government policy. It is just a proposal from a group of city based fishers. It would be appreciated if we could all look at the proposal objectively, rather than subjectively and emotionally. And it's not terribly relevant ,what you heard "around the traps." Repeating  rumour isn't being objective!

Crikey! The chatter on the network is ferocious. Mandatory lifejackets for rock-fishers is only a proposal! Yet it seems it's dead BEFORE it hits the water.
