LAWS that ban fishing on 16 per cent of Moreton Bay could swing four bayside Labor seats to the LNP, fishermen say.
The Bligh Government's laws came into effect on Sunday and increased the size of green zones, where recreational and commercial fishing are banned, in the Moreton Bay Marine Park, which stretches from Caloundra to the Gold Coast.
The Liberal National Party has promised to allow recreational fishers to continue fishing in the green zones while scientists complete a $3 million one-year environmental study into the area.
The LNP would also increase compensation payments from $15 million, as allocated by Labor, to $20 million for commercial fishermen who surrender their licences.
Although it has been slammed by conservationists, the LNP policy has been lauded by peak recreational and commercial fishing bodies, who say the measure could have a major impact on the ALP's success in four key seats.
Four Labor seats, three of them marginal, line the 3400sqkm expanse of the Moreton Bay Marine Park: Pumicestone (held by 5.5 per cent), Redcliffe (5.9 per cent), Cleveland (1.3 per cent) and Redlands (6.8 per cent).
Reasons to vote them out:
?   Morton Bay is nearly all sand with few structures to attract fish.
?   16% sanctuaries will wipe out the best fishing spots.
?   Nearly all recreational species commonly caught in the bay are migratory.
?   None of these species are threatened by overfishing, a problem best addressed by catch limits anyway.
?   There is no credible research worldwide that supports the effectiveness of sanctuary zones for migratory species over sand.

You beauty SOBA! That has nailed it! Now the campaign begins! Cleveland looks like a soft target. Let's focus on that for awhile! (And see what response there is, to the shock waves!)

These seats are on the radar !

As well as the seat of Hervey Bay, the Current Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability resides there ! Have a pretty good base of SOBA associates ready to swing into action ! It's starting to spread !  Wink

This is great stuff. With the election tight a swing to LNP in these seats, especially if it is against a trend across the state will really show the influence of the fishing vote. bring it on.

Current Premier, Anna Blind, has undertaken to improve a lot of Qld's boat ramps, IF SHE IS RE-ELECTED! Little comfort in that for family recreational fishers, when all the best, favourite and easily accessible fishing grounds, are locked -up in Labor's "green zones!" And why wait until there is an election BEFORE up-dating the state's maritime infrastructure?
Does she think she is casting pearls........?

Qld Labor has been there ten years. And they are broke! NSW Labor has been there for thirteen years and they are broker and bent! Time to get rid of them both! Time for a new start - a start based upon sound science and not green idealogy!

So true and a knee-jerk reaction to the LNP policy on ramps only this times she's been caught with her pants down big time!

The QLD recreational anglers are seeing straight through all the BS and smoke screens !

And surprise, surprise, Labour has done a deal with the Greens for preferences votes in 14 seats  Roll Eyes

Last election it cost us 16% of Moreton Bay  Sad We won't be making the same mistake twice ! The Greens want 30% shut out to recreational anglers !

Not on our watch !

Time to boot this 2 faced, vote buying, green slave premier out of Government in the hope of some sanity !

Shame that the mutiny didn't come good.  Maybe next election.  I wish you well.

Whilst it wasn't the result we wanted to see, SOBA will relentlesly lobby / push for a better deal for all recreational anglers in QLD.

No matter who the opposition is, we will be heard and prevail !

Orginisations like ours need to stand up against the green flavoured, anti-fishing movement infecting and erroding our lifestyles !
