It seems that the Australian Marine Conservations Society is lobbying the goverment to have a massive section of the Coral Reefs closed. More info here: http://www.amcs.org.au/default2.asp?active_page_id=562

Thanks for that link Andy !

If this was a serious proposition to protect the Coral Sea were do these people/orginisations think the funding to protect these areas will come from ?

It's only a stab in the dark but what ? 10+ new Navy Frigates to pratrol these areas ?

From what i've seen on TV we're flat out protecting the waters North of the country from illegal fishing ?

And what colour would these exclusion zones be for international raiders ? Red ?

Whilst some would get a warm fuzzy feeling from this, the money would be better spent protecting the local rivers, mangroves and waterways from development, pollution and siltation Australia wide !

Damo.

19/5/08. BATTLE FOR THE CORAL SEA 2009: THE REAL OIL! Labor's Federal Minister Garrett, today announced a 972,000 square km "Conservation Zone," in our Coral Sea. At the same time he announced the East Marine Bioregional Profile, which is a preliminary step in establishing another marine protected area for the east coast. There are no further restrictions planned for recreational fishing AT THIS STAGE. Oh yeah? Can anyone believe a politician?
