A Sydney radio journalist, doing a recent interview with ECOfishers, said she had been following ECOfishers in the media for a few years now and asked about our origins. Without prompting, the ECOfisher doing the interview by phone quipped, "Well, we did an internet search of our origin and history and came up with 1770. That's our first recorded incident. It is in the ship's log. An ECOfisher was asked to harvest some stingrays for the pot, from what was later named Stingray Bay - now Botany Bay. That crew member fished sustainably, so obviously he was an ECOfisher.
In his "Endeavours," the skipper was also an ECOfisher, because he made his crew "part of the solution." And because the resident botanist was aware of our slogan, "Healthy Habitat - Healthy Fishery," he prevailed upon the ECOfisher skipper, to change the name on the chart he was drafting, from Stingray Bay to Botany Bay." And he did. In an ECOfisher way, he did what the crew wanted.
If only he could see it now!
The journalist swallowed it hook, line and sinker. "Really!," was her startled response and she then moved on to the next question for ECOfishers.
And we are still here today, representing the crew. Why not join us now and become part of the solution?

Even the well known and respected Northern Rivers Fisheries Conference, established in 1980, ( a confederation of commercial and  recreational fishers representatives and  academics, including university staff, etc) and chaired by Ken Thurlow, became an integral part of ECOfishers.  Rocky
