Marine park to save the coastline
James Woodford
December 4, 2008
A PROPOSAL for a massive marine park stretching along Sydney's coast - from Gosford in the north to the Royal National Park in the south and three kilometres out to sea - is being launched today.
The National Parks Association of NSW wants the State Government to fulfil a long-standing election commitment to create a full system of marine reserves along the NSW coast, including off Sydney.
The proposed 103,000-hectare Sydney Marine Park would take in all four of the region's estuaries, including Sydney Harbour and Botany Bay. If adopted, it would be the largest urban marine park in the world.
Not all of the proposed park would be closed to recreational and commercial fishing, the parks association's marine program manager, Nicky Hammond, said. It would have a system of gazetted multiple-use zones and only a small percentage of areas would be protected from all forms of exploitation, she said.
The marine park would take in part of the area used annually for the humpback whale migration, as well as penguin habitats and large tracts of ocean and estuaries frequented by dolphins. There are also populations of seahorses and seadragons. Sydney Harbour alone has nearly 600 species of fish. "There's a huge diversity of marine life," Ms Hammond said. "It's a teeming underwater world down there next to a huge, bustling city."
Large and controversial marine parks have been created in areas of NSW including near Batemans Bay off the Eurobodalla Coast, in Jervis Bay and at Port Stephens. But the Government has failed to declare a marine park in Sydney's coastal waters.
As part of a report on NSW marine conservation being released today by the parks association, a second major coastal reserve is also proposed - for the Eden-Twofold Bay area, just north of the Victorian border.
The association is also calling for 1500-metre exclusion zones to be imposed around all of the known habitats for the critically endangered grey nurse sharks.
Paul Winn, who wrote the association's report, said the new marine park was important because the area was under so much pressure. "A Sydney Marine Park represents an opportunity to provide ecological sustainability to a much-loved and used part of the Australian coastline," the report says.
Recreational fishing groups have bitterly fought the creation of marine parks and will almost certainly oppose any further conservation measures.
Brad Warren, the executive chairman of Oceanwatch - which represents the environmental interests of the commercial fishing industry - said the process had to be based on rigorous science.
"There would need to be compensation for all businesses negatively impacted, including commercial fishing operators, bait shops and tackle shops," Mr Warren said.
A spokesman for the Environment Minister, Carmel Tebbutt, said the report would be referred to the Marine Parks Authority for advice.
The state had six large, multiple-use marine parks covering 345,000 hectares - or 34 per cent of NSW waters - 12 aquatic reserves covering 2000 hectares and marine and estuarine components of national parks and nature reserves, the spokesman said.

Anglers fear marine greenies
PLANS to be announced today for the world's first big city marine park - stretching from Newcastle through Sydney to Wollongong - have sparked fears hundreds of thousands of anglers will be locked out of their favourite fishing spots.
The National Parks Association, a non-government conservation organisation, will also reveal its scheme for a network of "marine protection zones" running down the entire NSW coast.
The NPA has enlisted world famous marine activist Valerie Taylor to launch its proposals, which have already been endorsed by Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore. The NPA's marine park proposals for the Hawkesbury Shelf bio-region - the coast between Newcastle and Wollongong - would divide waterways into different zones where various activities are banned.
National parks: Slugged just to see nature
NPA marine program manager Nicky Hammond said yesterday the park would include Sydney Harbour, Broken Bay, Botany Bay and Port Hacking as well as inshore ocean waters.
It also includes many of the state's most famous beaches.
"The proposed Sydney Marine Park will provide protection for the area's diverse habitats including rocky reefs and sponge gardens, which are home to hundreds of marine species," Ms Hammond said.
"While commercial and recreational fishing continues in marine parks, fully protected sanctuary zones within the park will help boost the numbers, size and productivity of our fish, help protect endangered species and provide valuable tourism and economic benefits."
The NPA will also reveal today its plan for a marine protection network from Tweed Heads in the north to Cape Howe in the south.
Anglers fear being locked out of scores or even hundreds of famous fishing spots. Anglers' Action Group president Phil Ingram said yesterday anglers did not object to marine parks which had undergone proper scientific assessment.

FIVE  MORE  MARINE  PARKS  PROPOSED - Green Lemons:
A handful of terrestrial ecologists, who call themselves the National Parks Association, is today calling for the establishment of five (5) new marie parks.
They will be in Sydney (103,000 ha) south of Tweed heads, South West Rocks, Camden Haven and Twofold Bay at Eden. These extremists, who have no marine expertise or experience, also want the Jervis Bay park extended and all before 2011. There is a state government election, on 26 March 2011, which Labor is guaranteed to lose. ANSA (Australian National Sportsfishing Association) is supportive. Clearly they are out of touch with the science and main stream recreational fishing famimies.
The Daily Telegraph today reports, a new marine park is proposed, known as the Bundjalung Marine Park, which appears to join the Cape Byron Political Park and extends south to and includes Iluka and Yamba!
The NPA is also demanding 12 more Aquatic Reserves and 32 more Reserves in NSW estuaries. They also want fishing bans in any estuary within a National Park or Reserve.
It is Labor government policy to declare any area djacent to a National Park or Nature Reserve
as so called "sanctuary zones."
Now if this doesn't galvanise recreational family fishers and overcome the apathy, nothing will!
JOIN ECOFISHERS NOW and save your recreation and protect your  rights!

APATHY: They can't do that! They won't do that here! WELL THEY JUST DID!
So what are you going to do about it now?  Join ECOfishers and we will take them on in the trenches. We will fight them on the beaches. WE will fight them on the water. And we will fight them in the media. And we will expose them for the green charlatans they are. Your rights and recreation are now very much at stake. Are you going to just roll over and be robbed by a bunch of green extremists? Or are you going to join ECOfishers and stand up for and defend your rights? It is entirely up to you! Why wait? Join ECOfishers now. You'll enjoy it!

ECOfishers RESPONDS:  Lead item on the Prime TV News tonight was the interview with ECOfishers CEO Ken Thurlow, who explained the scientific futility of government marine parks posing to protect the marine biodiversity. He finished an informative interview with, "tens of millions of taxpayer dollars wasted for no environmental benefit."
The TV station then cut straight to an interview with Fisheries MInister Macdonald to respond.  He said,"No one has approached him for more marine parks in NSW and what a good job he was doing in looking after the interests of the state's commercial and recreational fishers."
The night before on national news, DECC Minister and Deputy Premier, Carmel Tebutt, cheerily announced, (in response to the NPA's radical claims) "the Rees Labor government will carefully consider any proposal for more marine parks in NSW. We must protect our fisheries resources from over exploitation" and she "will happily take this latest proposal to Cabinet."
JUST WHO IS MANAGING NSW FISHERIES??? DECC or NSW FISHERIES???
And whom do the public believe??? - Tebutt or Macdonald or none of them???

What worries me is a desperate Labor Party will attempt to buy the green vote at the next election by creating these unpopular, unscientific and fraudulent marine parks just before the election. Once there they will be hard to remove.
MacDonald has misinformed the people of NSW so many times how could you trust him? We also have groups supposedly supporting recreational fishers supporting marine parks and sanctuary zones that have been referred to as "fraudulently created" by world renowned scientists. This is not helping our cause.
It is necessary to convince politicians the fishing vote is bigger than the radical green vote. Fishers must show their strength and no better time than now.

STAND UP FISHERS AND BE COUNTED! Now is the time to join ECOfishers to defend and protect your rights. You pay an annual recreational fishing licence fee and at the same time you are being robbed blind by a Labor government hell bent on locking up half the coast to gain a few green preferences.
Last state government election, ECOfishers targetted the only two coastal seats Labor held  (Port Stephens and Tweed) over their marine parks. Labor lost both seats! Thus is the power of ECOfishers. Join ECOfishers and protect your rights. Join NOW. Next month could be too late!

WHY:  Why is it the Tasmanian government can announce 14 new marine parks in Tassie (2008) with no restrictions on recreational fishing? Yet NSW Labor announces it's 6 marine parks and the only restrictions apply to fishing? Why? Doesn't make sense to me!
Why is it that the Tasmanian Fisheries Management Act is considered sufficient to manage the fishery, in their government marine parks and elsewhere?
Why is the NSW Department of Conservation and Climate Change, (DECC) able to impose fisheries management strategies over, above and beyond those of NSW Fisheries?
Why is the NSW Minister for Fisheries so weak kneed and lily livered when it comes to standing up for the rights of NSW recreational and commercial fishers?
JUST WHO IS MANAGING NSW FISHERIES?  DECC or DPI?
Fishers, while you remain disunited and indulge in APATHY, you will continue to be ripped right off. Politicians want to keep you that way.  Join ECOfishers and help make a difference!

Carmel Tebbett can pass this on to the NMPA at the present time but come 2001 it will be decided by the people of NSW or at least 1,000,00 of them

ABC News today

Stoner rejects marine parks push
Posted 6 hours 20 minutes ago
Updated 6 hours 19 minutes ago

Map: South West Rocks 2431
New South Wales Nationals' leader Andrew Stoner is opposed to calls for more marine parks along the east coast of the state.

The National Parks Association wants another six marine parks and has stated the reasons in a report released this month.

Under the proposal, all fishing activities would be banned in certain zones.

Mr Stoner, who is also the Oxley MP, says locking up vast areas from fishing would hurt economies in places like South West Rocks and Laurieton.

"We're talking about a huge area including the coastline and significant way out to sea around South West Rocks," he said.

"What's being proposed by an extreme green group is that there be no fishing allowed at all in these new parks.

"I think that's absolutely over the top, especially when studies have shown recreational fishing does not harm fish stocks in any way."

Mr Stoner says many small north coast towns rely on fishing tourism.

"For places like the Camden Haven, South West Rocks, Hat Head and so on this would really be a devastating impact on their local economy," he said.

"The economies in those locations are really underpinned by fishing tourism, it's the traditional Aussie holiday.

"To have that effectively stopped I think would be tragic not just for those economies but really for a lifestyle."

Media Release: 9th December 2008
For immediate release: Sydney?s marine park: protecting mermaids

In a response to Professor Bob Kearney?s criticisms of the lack of science used in NSW marine parks, Professor David Booth, chair of the Sydney Institute of Marine Science?s Scientific Committee, said ?There appear to be a lot of charlatans in this debate. If you want sensible comment about marine biological issues, you should go to professional marine biologists. If not, comments should be taken with a grain of salt.?

Clover Moore, Member for Bligh, in her web page ?Marine Park for Sydney? dated 17th October 2008 and as part of the justification for a marine park in the Hawkesbury Bioshelf, stated: ?Species that urgently need protection in the Hawkesbury Shelf Bioregion include the grey nurse shark, estuary cod and the woody sea dragon.?

There are two types of sea dragons in Australia?s southern waters, being the leafy sea dragon and the more common weedy sea dragon. There is no such species called the woody sea dragon, and one never existed in Australian waters.

AAG President Phil Ingram comments: ?This statement is typical of those that have little or no knowledge of marine species, the marine environment and ecosystems, but are merely mouthpieces for other organisations. I would like Ms Moore to tell me how can you justify a marine park for the protection of an animal that doesn?t exist? Professor Booth is right, we have to take what Ms Moore and others say with a grain of salt.?

Phil continued: ?It?s like creating a mark for the protection of the mermaid! We agree with Professor Booth?s comments. The debate for marine parks should be ruled more by science rather than rhetoric and unfounded statements.?

.....and the only species NOT already protected is Clover Moores, mythical Woody Seadragon."
Yet government marine parks don't even protect the Leafy or Weedy Seadragons, nor Seahorses or Pipefish. I recently collected three Seahorses and a Pipefish, all killed by osmotic shock from stormwater intrusion in a so called sanctuary zone in a government marine park.
So clearly, the green myths and legends persist. Pure emotional nonsense.

Clover Moore's latest gaffe rivals that of ex Environment Minister Bob Debus. Standing on a windswept Cape Byron before a handful of the "true believers," he gayly announced the Cape Byron Park would protect "Whales, turtles and dolphins!" Surprised, one local asked "Is that all?"
After a brief whisper from his aide, (Mark Abib) he hurriedly added, "and the algae too!' To which the same disappointed local said, "Whales, turtles and dolphins are already protected, have been for years and fishers don't fish for algae!" The TV cameras recorded the lot and ran it on the nightly news.
Debus suddenly had a plane to catch. The locals still laugh about it.

Any response from the greenies anywhere yet? The northern rivers greens are gearing up for a street theatre demonstration in support of their Bundjalung Marine Park. You know, they will be recycling the junk they draagged around Port Stephens, for a media stunt. Wally the whale, Dopey ther dolphin (or was that Snow White) and Gerry the Grey Nurse, with the gaff down its throat. Appalling theatre - but good for an emotional sympathy trip. Only the Greens could / would do it. We all hope it rains like hell and all the colour runs out of their crepe paper!
