Yes, they weren't given much choice.  It was pretty much a lose-lose situation.  I believe they made the right decision.  You can't please all of the people all of the time, but then common sense isn't that common these days either.

What should have ACoRF and the RFFTEC done differently?  How would you have handled the situation differently?

AcorF should have called minister MacDonalds bluff. Isn't the hatchery situated in one of Labor's most marginal seats? Let MacDonald hangout one of Labor's ministers to dry. As it is a win win situation for the government. Fishers pay for the hatchery and Labor representative shines for saving it. What a perfect senario for an almost bunkrupt state government.
Then again AcorF is ministers appointees representing the Government not recreational fishers.
    What else would you expect.

And then what, if they had gone ahead and closed it?

Now we note an ECOfishers article in the "Bush 'n Beach" fishing magazine. The article relates to Artificial Reefs for NSW (Newcastle, Sydney and Wollongong)
Seems some of the fishing mags can't get enough of ECOfishers stuff either. I have no idea how it got there, but they're welcome to it . It furthers the cause of NSW recreational fishers and that is always a good thing. ECOfishers - making people part of the solution!

And now we have an ECOfishers article re-published in the Richmond River Sun. So as long as they acknowledge ECOfishers as the source of their article I suppose we have no objection - after all it is all about furthering the cause of NSW recreational fishers. And that's what ECOfishers is all about - conservation thru' sustainable use. Making people part of the solution.

"and what if they closed it" NSW Labor would have taken a marginal labor seat and made it a lost seat. Just imagine that happening.

The Labor mandarins in Sussex St would never, ever allow that to happen - ever!

ECOfishers has recieved, as promised,  a summary of the Artificial Reefs consultation meetings.
You were represented at the Sydney meeting, by ECOfishers, at the invitation of NSW Fisheries and Cardno Technology (the consultants) The 20 page report will be posted here, just as soon as your staff can get to it. It is the queue to be done today. (among a million other ECOfisher things.)

October 2011. New government - new minister (Thank goodness because ECOfishers voted for change - real change!)
Fisheries Minister, Katrina Hodgkinson, has announced the first offshore reef deployment off Vauclause (Sydney) 14.10.11. See details in ministerial press release to ECOfishers below.
